A friend of mine just started a blog holding herself accountable to lose weight by her birthday in December. I too am facing some issues this summer and was inspired by her honesty to hold myself accountable this year. This week I found out that I need to have both knees replaced. My right knee has been bad for almost 20 years and I have not been able to do more than a fast walk and that included pain most of the time. Last fall my left knee began to give me grief and now is worse than my right knee. I finally gave in and went to a surgeon who said, "Good news. This is the easiest diagnosis I have had today. Your knees are completely shot and you need to replace both." I tried to talk him into another form of treatment but it didn't work. Over the past few years I have grown increasingly larger reaching 272 last year. I have lost enough weight over the 20 years to equal three times my body weight but always seem to find it again along with an extra pound or two. The doctor says that I will rehab quicker if I can lose some weight and I had already begun the day before thinking that might be the only problem. So far in five days I have lost 5 pounds. I started at 267 and weight 262 yesterday. I am just limiting my portions and trying to stay under 30 grams of fat per day. My cardiologist suggested the 30 gram routine. Hope I can continue to have the discipline.
Doctor also said that I need to strengthen my thighs to assist in rehab. There was an exercise machine left in one of the rental houses the church owns and we tore it apart and put it in the parsonage basement. A couple of the stations really help with strength training on my legs and I am also going through all the other stations. Might as well get to work on the whole body.
